FAQ

The Sea Sounds Portal is a collaborative project that aims to bring together thousands of underwater sound resources, for the open access use of researchers in analysis of soundscapes. We are compiling the largest dataset of verified underwater sound clips available online to the scientific community for use in marine research and conservation. The recording of soundscapes can provide key tools for environmental assessment, and access to thousands of individual sounds creates a unique opportunity to supply algorithms with information for classification of certain environments and for specific purposes. This portal is hosted by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.
Researchers who have recorded sounds in the marine environment. You must be verified by a team member of SSP, please write to seasounds@kaust.edu.sa or via the Contact Us page to be sent an invitation to collaborate. This ensures quality control for all sounds uploaded.
Uploaded sounds will be open access to both the scientific community, and any member of the general public who are curious to explore underwater sound! Interesting sounds will also (if approved by the uploader) be shared with the Ocean Sound Bank, a public outreach program to get people passionate about discovering the not-so-Silent Ocean.
The short nature of the clips allow easy and meaningful addition into machine learning algorithms. The diverse and complex statistical properties of sounds mean that identifying short clips is an easier task for machine learning to then re-discover within a soundscape. For example, a one hour dolphin recording will probably not exactly match with your new soundscape, however, using an array of short clips, it is much more likely to capture a spectral similarity and pick up that source.

The maximum allowed file size for a single file is 5 MB.
